The neighbourhood of Poblenou in Barcelona was once called the 'Manchester' of Catalonia. It was full of industry with a strong community spirit. Then, when industry moved elsewhere many of the empty, factory buildings were occupied by art collectives, theatre and circus companies and this community spirit became even stronger. I had a studio in two of these art collectives for several years until we were evicted, the building demolished and left, still empty after 10 years. A common story in those days when many creatives were forced out of the area by redevelopment and a lack of affordable studio space. This process of change continues today and in fact has gathered momentum as mass tourism now threatens to eradicate the essence of this unique corner of Barcelona. I have been documenting these changes since 2004 and they feature extensively in my work.
